At Novo Nordisk, we are guided by the principle that the needs
and experiences of the people we provide treatments for must be
reflected in everything we do. This is what we mean by a
'patient-centred approach'.
Our approach is based on an
evolving worldview where people with serious chronic diseases are no
longer seen as passive recipients of healthcare, but as experts by
experience. Through sharing their valuable insights into what it is
like to live with a chronic disease, they can help us to improve the
future of healthcare.
Our Global Patient Relations team puts our patient-centred approach
into practice by partnering with a network known as the Disease
Experience Expert Panels (DEEPs). DEEPs are made up of individuals
living with chronic diseases, or relatives of those who are, who can
provide disease-specific insights and advice based on their own
experiences.
Panels are currently being recruited across
four therapy areas: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, obesity,
non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease (CVD).

As patients and advocates, DEEP members provide expert knowledge and
insights into the needs, preferences and challenges of people living
with serious chronic diseases.
Their input guides every
part of our care delivery model from how we research and develop
innovative new treatments, to how we support individuals who use our
treatments to achieve the best possible health outcomes.
The Global Patient Relations team works with DEEP members on a
range of different projects, including advisory boards, workshops,
interviews and presentations. There are four types of DEEP membership.
To foster mutually beneficial partnerships with DEEP members,
our Global Patient Relations team follows the guidelines of the
European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI) and the
Patient Partner project funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the
European Commission. These guidelines set out six clear roles that
people living with chronic diseases can take when engaging with
healthcare companies and academia:
?
The philosophy behind the Novo Nordisk DEEP programme is to listen
and learn. We create spaces where individuals with a specific chronic
disease can contribute their knowledge and experiences to improve the
lives of others affected by similar diseases.
DEEP
insights have empowered us to design better clinical trials, to
develop effective support materials, and to deliver more engaging
awareness campaigns. DEEPs have also given rise to other initiatives,
and often partner in global advocacy projects that benefit both Novo
Nordisk and relevant patient communities.
“It is really important to me that we work together… I think
industry working together with clinicians and patients – as equal
partners – is the way forward”
Ken Clare, DEEP member.
